1.4 Scientific Background and App Purpose

IOLResearch is the evolution of a family of standalone research applications developed by the Qvision Research and Evidence Department (Qvision Academy) over more than a decade.

The predecessor applications for visual-performance measurement were designed as specialized tools, each focusing on a specific visual function:

  • ClinicCSF — contrast sensitivity function.

  • Multifocal Lens Analyzer — visual acuity and contrast sensitivity defocus curves.

  • StereoTAB — stereopsis.

  • VisionC — standardized visual acuity assessment at multiple distances and contrast levels.

The predecessor tool for outcomes analysis was developed separately as a MATLAB toolbox and has now been integrated into IOLResearch:

  • Refractive Analysis Toolbox — standardized analysis and reporting of outcomes in cataract and laser refractive surgery.

Together, these predecessor tools provided the scientific and technical foundations for IOLResearch, which integrates visual-performance measurement and standardized outcomes analysis within a single research platform.

The measurement methods behind these applications have been scientifically evaluated through validation, agreement, reliability, and reproducibility studies, and the applications have subsequently been used by Qvision and independent research groups in peer-reviewed studies involving intraocular lenses, presbyopia, refractive surgery, contact lenses, binocular vision, and other areas of vision science.

IOLResearch brings this experience together in a single, modern research platform. Instead of using separate applications for individual visual-performance measurements, investigators can perform multiple assessments within the same structured study environment and associate the results with subjects, procedures, protocols, and predefined follow-up visits.

IOLResearch therefore extends the original concept beyond individual visual tests. It combines visual-performance measurement, longitudinal data collection, study organization, and standardized outcomes analysis in one integrated workflow designed to make clinical research more efficient and consistent.

The purpose of IOLResearch is to support protocol-driven clinical research by providing qualified investigators and vision-science professionals with structured tools to administer visual-performance assessments, record research data, and analyze outcomes consistently across study visits.

IOLResearch supports the collection and analysis of research outcomes. It does not provide a diagnosis, prescribe or recommend treatment, select an IOL or refractive procedure, or make patient-specific clinical decisions. Results are intended to be interpreted by the investigator within the study protocol and together with appropriate scientific and clinical judgment.

The measurement methodologies implemented in IOLResearch are informed by published standards and recommendations for IOL clinical research and visual-performance assessment. IOLResearch facilitates the application of these methodologies within a structured digital workflow; it does not define or replace the standards themselves.
